MY LEGAL BACKGROUND

I am a barrister with experience since 1994 as a litigation specialist, having developed expertise in Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi) and Māori Land Court cases, commercial litigation particularly insolvency and contract cases, and criminal law.

Immediately prior to joining the independent bar in January 2019, I was a Crown Counsel in the Treaty of Waitangi Team at the New Zealand Crown Law Office. Prior to that, I held positions in Australia, Wellington and the Bay of Plenty where I developed my litigation expertise.

In July 2023, I joined the Public Defence Service in Wellington on a part-time basis to re-immerse myself in criminal practice. I concluded my practice with the PDS in October 2024.

Throughout my career, I have established a solid reputation as a civil, commercial and criminal lawyer focused on my clients’ need for clear, concise advice as to legal remedies and litigation strategies, as well as strong and skilled representation (advocacy) in the courts and before Tribunals, in mediations and in arbitrations.

I have extensive experience in the public sector, with a deep understanding of the operations and machinations of Central and Local Government.  I can provide advice in relation to the acts, omissions and decision-making of Government as well as representation in courts and other proceedings.

I also wanted to send a personal note to say how sorry I am to hear that you’ll be finishing up on [Porirua ki Manawatū district inquiry] and other hearing work soon.

Your depth of knowledge on the Inquiry and its issues and your sharp analysis of our submissions is going to leave a very big gap, and I’ll miss your company at hearing weeks too.

I’ve really enjoyed our working relationship and your collaborative approach to our various submissions.

I didn’t want to wait any longer before letting you know how much of a loss this will be from my perspective (which I know isn’t confined to me).

- Farewell email from Crown official with regard to Waitangi Tribunal work, 2021

As you would be aware, the long standing dispute between the NRMA and the NRMA Patrolmen has been resolved. …we decided to seek a solution using Corporation Law alongside Industrial Law. To this end, we sought your assistance.  That assistance came in the main in the form of Ms Jacki Cole, and I would take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks for the dedicated way in which Ms Cole went about providing that assistance.

Ms Cole went to great lengths in and out of normal work hours to ensure that we would be successful in our campaign against the NRMA and its’ plans to contract out the work of the existing Patrolmen.  The 17 delegates who were also involved in the dispute have also asked me to express their appreciation for the “hard yards” that Ms Cole put in on their behalf.
