Senior Official, Ministry of the Crown, Wai 2750, 2021
I have really appreciated the way you have managed this process and kept things on track. Some cat herding has been required (of necessity) and I have appreciated your robust no nonsense approach, coupled with your deep commitment to giving this work the attention it deserves.
Farewell email from senior Crown official re Wai 2750 (Housing kaupapa inquiry), 2021
I also wanted to send a personal note to say how sorry I am to hear that you’ll be finishing up on [Porirua ki Manawatū district inquiry] and other hearing work soon. Your depth of knowledge on the Inquiry and its issues and your sharp analysis of our submissions is going to leave a very big gap, and I’ll miss your company at hearing weeks too. I’ve really enjoyed our working relationship and your collaborative approach to our various submissions. … I didn’t want to wait any longer before letting you know how much of a loss this will be from my perspective (which I know isn’t confined to me).
Farewell email from Crown official, 2021
I was sorry to hear that this will be your last appearance at a [Porirua ki Manawatū district inquiry] hearing on behalf of the Crown. You have been highly respected by Tribunal staff on the PkM inquiry over the years and we will miss seeing you at the hearings! I wish you all the best in your future endeavours.
Farewell email from Waitangi Tribunal inquiry facilitator, 2021
I am incredibly sad to hear you are moving on. You will make a huge gap in the professional work flow for Crown Law. I will especially miss working with you, as you are a pleasure to assist as an [role anonymised for privacy reasons].
Farewell email from former support person I worked closely with for a number of years, 2021
I’m sure you have mixed emotions leaving PKM and your other inquiries to embark on your new journey. Traveling to marae and spending intense amounts of time with the communities connects you to the people and the whenua in ways that can’t be articulated accurately in English. Thank you for your mahi in the Tribunal space - your professionalism and strength will be missed.
Farewell email from former Waitangi Tribunal staff member, 2021
I have really enjoyed working with you over the last four years. You are super cool and really supportive. We've had some great times and I am going to miss you a lot. But I hope our paths will cross a lot in the years to come.
Farewell email from intermediate level lawyer, 2021
I wanted to thank you for your huge efforts over the past week. (And all the work leading up to it). These are very important events and I thought you corralled us all very well and ensured that the Crown put forward an open and honest and generally connected position. At a personal level thank you for the support you provided me. It was a new experience and your guidance and encouragement was appreciated. I learnt a lot!
Email from Chief Executive of government department following Crown hearing week, 2021
Senior Barrister, Sydney, to Partner of Law Firm following conclusion of NSW Supreme Court Corporations Act proceedings, 2004
Former Federal Court Judge, Western Australia, 2014
I am full of admiration for the way in which Jacki Cole administered every aspect of the 2015 PILON course. In foreign surrounds and dealing with persons from a multiplicity of ethnicities (both faculty and participants), Jacki ran a course which, from my perspective, functioned efficiently and well, and which delivered a very high standard of tuition to the participants. I cannot be commendatory enough of all her efforts.
Letter to Solicitor-General from King’s Counsel involved in Pacific Islands Law Officers’ Network (PILON) litigation skills programme, 2015
Another solicitor gave me your details, and they told me in my own words something like “you are the Wizo in dealing with crap from liquidators and don’t accept any bull shit and if anybody screws up, you have the balls to speak your mind and will nail people if they talk crap”. So I thought, that’s the type I want and, being honest, my first time speaking to you, I loved the frankness and way you spoke, no bull shit and direct knowing exactly where you stand, same in your emails. Love it. So, sadly, you got me on your books until you’re old, rocking in your rocking chair and blowing bubbles.
Sydney-based client, advising how he came to be instructing me, 2010
… Lastly, I would again thank my instructing solicitor for all her assistance and support in conducting this urgent and difficult series of hearings. It was a pleasure to have such competent, willing and interested support, particularly when the end result was so satisfactory for the client.
As you would be aware, the long standing dispute between the NRMA and the NRMA Patrolmen has been resolved. …we decided to seek a solution using Corporation Law alongside Industrial Law. To this end, we sought your assistance. That assistance came in the main in the form of Ms Jacki Cole, and I would take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks for the dedicated way in which Ms Cole went about providing that assistance. Ms Cole went to great lengths in and out of normal work hours to ensure that we would be successful in our campaign against the NRMA and its’ plans to contract out the work of the existing Patrolmen. The 17 delegates who were also involved in the dispute have also asked me to express their appreciation for the “hard yards” that Ms Cole put in on their behalf.
Former Assistant State Secretary, Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union to Senior Partner of Law firm, Sydney, 2004
When we felt [sic] into troubles, we needed the best possible help, but we got a better one. [My wife] and I we both had the impression that you didn’t just your job, but more, that you worked with your heart. Working with you, we learned a little bit about you, and about ourselves. The accident caused a dramatic brake [sic] in our journey and also in our lifes [sic]. Up to this date … at Whakatāne, we fell into hell. Now, after everything you helped us with, we now feel like being on the earth again. We have been very pleased to meet you! You did a very very good job.
European tourist client charged with multiple counts of Careless Driving Causing Death and Careless Driving Causing Injury, 1999
The reason I am writing to you is to put my thoughts on how well your associate, Ms Jacki Cole, conducted my defence. I firstly must state my embarrassment in, after initially using Jacki’s services, I was advised to seek further representation from a “more experienced barrister”. This unfortunately caused further anguish and delay resulting in, just prior to the trial, advice that my lawyer could not proceed on the trial day. I was able to contact Ms Cole who willingly picked up the case again at very short notice. Both my wife and I were stunned at the tremendous efficiency and dedication Ms Cole showed over the few days before the trial. Ms Cole was able to go from zero to prepare for the trial by gathering information quickly and with great skill.
At the trial, Ms Cole again showed her true professionalism and dedication. Ms Cole conducted my defence with extreme care which resulted in the case being dismissed. Comment from my family and colleagues was also praiseworthy of Ms Cole.
I can only say that I am pleased that Ms Cole represented me in the end as I believe I would not have had a better defence counsel.
Client facing trial for Careless Driving Causing Death: Letter to The Partners of law firm in the Bay of Plenty, 1999
As the judge primarily responsible for the disposition of Native Title cases in the Kimberley, I have been assisted hugely by your involvement. Your written submissions have, apart from normally being correct, been a model of clarity and brevity. Your advocacy has been courteous, direct and always of assistance. Native Title cases, as you know much better than I, are often difficult and emotionally charged. You brought great objectivity to the cases you handled and yet your passion for the claims groups was obvious. Your leaving is, in my opinion, a considerable loss to the profession in Western Australia – though no doubt New Zealand’s gain.
